Whistler is a favourite weekend destinations for both locals and tourists alike – and while it is best know for its mountains and white powder during the ski season there is plenty to do all year round…like getting married.
Two friends of mine are avid Whistler fans so it made sense that they chose the mountain as the destination for their nuptials. They selected the Westin Whistler Resort & Spa as the venue and invited 100+ of their friends and family to be a part of the day, including me!
So on Canada Day long weekend we packed our overnight bags and happily made the two hour drive up the mountain. After all, what better place to celebrate the nation’s birthday?
Upon check in at the Westin, we were greeted by smiling and friendly staff. We rushed to our rooms and found comfortable bedding, a nice sized suite but best of all, a great peaceful view where you could peer out to the village below but with just enough privacy. Although we didn’t cook on our visit the room – as often seen in ski-in/ski-out resorts – came with a full kitchen. Bonus! At the time of my visit, the sun was out in its full glory but my mind couldn’t help but wander to think about the tasty comfort meals the slow cooker could make in the winter. Think: a big bowl of hearty chilli that has been cooking all day while you’ve been out on the mountaintop.
After a quick dip in the pool (no better way to refresh after a long drive) we headed to the hotels restaurant Aubergine Grille where the patio had been transformed to serve as the wedding ceremony venue. The ceremony was beautiful with white-capped mountains and bright blue skies as the background – almost as stunning as the bride.
Post-ceremony, we were served canapés, cocktails and bubbly champagne. While we were enjoying the treats out in the sun, the restaurant inside was being dressed for the reception where the show kitchen served up your usual wedding fare, topped off by a great dessert bar.
After a long night of wedding antics, we were happy to retreat to our room and to dooze off in the Westin’s signature ‘Heavenly Bed’…zzz. Destination weddings – no matter how near or far – are a great way to say I do and this was no different.
