What’s not to love about Pride Week? Parties, dancing, and the infamous parade make this an unforgettable celebration every summer. But before we start shakin’ it, we had to find out: what’s the cheap eat scene like?
Vancity Buzz and Chowmenow headed over to Davie Street to see if there are $5 food finds worth revisiting. What we discovered is variety just as colourful as the streets they adorn. So if you’ve got a few bucks and hunger pangs to settle, this neighbourhood has plenty to nosh, chomp, and chow on.
Just follow the rainbow road.
Start with a buttery puff pastry, then stuff it with mashed potatoes and mushrooms, and you have yourself a bagel on steroids. An awesome find at $4.95, the Bureka Bagel is a pretty good way to begin your morning…or finish your night. Open from 10am to 4am on Saturdays, Zaatar’s is the place to go when pizza and poutine just ain’t gonna cut it.
You had us at hello. Fried chicken with Dijon mashed potatoes, beef dip, truffle fries, and quinoa salad are just some of the $4.95 eats you can score here. Our personal favourite is the chicken wafflewhich. Davie sure does know how to do carbs.
Sandwiches are great any time of day, but at Baguette Time we only suggest breakfast. That’s when you can score Edam cheese, pesto mayo, capiccollo ham, and bacon for $4.99.
When a restaurant calls itself yummy, we have to see what’s lurking on the menu. Vegetarians get the cheap eat break here. One veggie item with rice or noodles is $4.49, while the noodles with veggie soup $4.75.
We highly recommend the savoury foccacias topped with eggplant, tomatoes, and other veggies, then slathered with mozzarella for $4.45. The pastries equally demand your $5 attention, especially the pistachio danish for $3.99.
