Hosting the beautiful marriage of international craft beer and delicious tapas, Kitsilano’s The August Jack is a must for both serious foodies and beer aficionados alike. Opening on July 19th, and replacing the Room 18 Lounge, the newly renovated and far more inviting restaurant sets itself aside by pairing a suggested beer with every item on the menu, including desserts.

Named after Squamish Chief August Jack Khatsahlano, the restaurant boasts a wonderful selection of seasonal dishes inspired by the Pacific Northwest, along the way consciously choosing to use only ethically and organically raised proteins, along with farmer direct and sustainably harvested seafood.

Wild mushroom toasts: seasoned wild mushrooms, hazelnut basil pesto, shaved manchego, balsamic reduction {Suggested pairing: Steamworks Pale Ale}

Executive Chef Benjamin Curtis, who hails from Halifax, Nova Scotia, grew up witnessing firsthand the province-wide devastation of declining fish stocks and overfishing, and therefore is very aware and promoting of Oceanwise seafood sustainability. The harvesting and catch of local, healthy fisheries is a major consideration for his menu.

Pan-seared beach oysters: tarragon garlic butter, grilled portobello slices, crispy fried leeks {Suggested pairing: Blanche De Chambly}

Taking West Coast favorites such as sockeye salmon, mussels, oysters and tuna, Chef Curtis adds in his own love of craft beer to create uniquely inspired and paired beer and tapas combinations.

“Beer has always been a hobby of mine. I started helping my dad homebrew at age 14, and I’ve been an avid beer drinker ever since. Having the opportunity to really explore the pairing of my two favourite things is kind of a dream job” says Chef Curtis of molding The August Jack’s distinct niche as Vancouver’s only food and craft beer pairing restaurant.

The restaurant also offers a portfolio of wines and a cheese list, and is working on pairing specialty cheeses with flights, including the eight craft beers on tap, such as Storm Brewing’s Black Plague Stout and Alameda’s Yellow Wolf Imperial IPA. Their new floor-to-ceiling glass display fridge, will soon allow for six more rotating craft beer taps, and house up to 80 varieties of bottled craft beer.

    I’m curious how long “Chef Curtis” is going to be there after they realize how much coke he does, or how bad he is at his job. And yeah he loves beer, he’s usually drunk.
