The federal government has approved the sale of the 52-acre Jericho Garrison Lands in Vancouver’s Point Grey area.

The large swath of undeveloped land just minutes away from the beach holds a value of hundreds of millions of dollars considering it is located in one of Vancouver’s most expensive neighbourhoods.

The Department of Defence has sold the land to Canada Lands Company, a crown corporation, which will in turn sell the land to developers for development. Few details are known at the moment about what will be built on the massive site, although it is now knowledge that a business venture will be entered with the Musqueam First Nations.

Considering the high value of the properties in the area, the lands will in all likelihood become a new neighbourhood of condo towers to maximize on profits. This ambiguity and threat of change has many Vancouver Westside residents concerned.

The base has been in the neighbourhood since World War II and was built to fend off Vancouver from a Japanese landing at the tip of the peninsula. Jericho Armoury and the 39 Canadian Brigade Group will be relocated to Seaforth Armoury on the southern end of Burrard Bridge. Seaforth Armoury is currently undergoing a major $40-million renovation and expansion project to accommodate the decommissioning of Jericho.
