Billy Talent are hitting the road this Fall for a series of very special shows in celebration of the band’s twentieth anniversary and the tenth anniversary of the release of their multi-platinum debut album, Billy Talent. With the lightning-fast success of their self-titled debut, Billy Talent quickly rose from playing clubs to headlining festivals and arenas (including the most recent Dead Silence tour this past winter). Now, the band returns to its roots, playing face-to-face for fans in five cities, performing their debut disc in its entirety followed by some of the most popular songs of the band’s career.
The special shows kick off on October 12th at the Sound Academy in Toronto followed by dates in Quebec City, Montreal, Vancouver and Calgary.
Billy Talent originally formed in 1993 under the name Pezz, having met each other at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Secondary School in Mississauga. They began building a local following by self-promoting their own headlining shows and then building stages with strapped together milk-cartons. By the end of the decade they had recorded their independent album Watoosh. In 1999, Pezz became aware of an American band with international rights to the same name so a search began for a new moniker.
Rather than becoming despondent about the name change, the band saw this as a kind of re-birth. They focused their sound and wrote new songs and Billy Talent were born. After more than ten years of slogging it out in the independent scene, the band was now hitting its stride and in 2002 they signed their major label deal. On September 16, 2003, Warner Music Canada released the self-titled album that became known as Billy Talent I . Fueled by the chart topping hits “Try Honesty,” “River Below,” “The Ex” and “Nothing To Lose,” the record went on to sell well over 300,000 copies in Canada as well as garnering a number of awards for the band including 2 Casby Awards, 3 Juno Awards and 3 MuchMusic Video Awards.
