Adventure Challenge VCB Run

Vancouver is a city that loves to play outside. This September, Vancouver’s outdoor sports lovers will have the opportunity to pursue their passion while also giving back to their community by taking part in the Adventure Challenge for Kids, a multi-sport charity event supporting B.C. children and their families. The event combines kayaking, biking and trail running, and promises to be a fun and exciting test of participants’ endurance and technical skills while they raise money for charity. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Canucks for Kids Fund, in support of Canuck Place Children’s Hospice and the 60 Minute Kids’ Club.

The event takes place in two locations. The Vancouver event (on Sunday, September 15) will see participants paddle out to sea from Jericho Beach before taking to the trails of UBC’s Pacific Spirit Park for the mountain bike and trail running segments of the race. For those in the Fraser Valley, Cultus Lake Provincial Park will set the stage (on Saturday, September 14), with participants kayaking the lake and cycling the paved park roads before running amongst old-growth giants on the Seven Sisters forest trail.

Adventure Challenge VCB Cherie Ehlert

Among the outdoor enthusiasts taking part in this year’s event is Adventure Challenge veteran, Cherie Ehlert. This will be her fourth time doing the Adventure Challenge. She credits the event for her current level of fitness. “I completed my first marathon last May,” Cherie said. “It all started with the Adventure Challenge.”

For Cherie, the Adventure Challenge is about more than physical fitness. Her daughter Charlie-Anne is a child on the Canuck Place program. “Canuck Place is an amazing resource, we are so grateful to have them supporting us!” she said. “Raising money for Canuck Place feels amazing. One thing everyone can agree on is that it’s never fair when a child gets sick. People want to do everything they can to help.” Participating in the Adventure Challenge for Kids is her way of giving back.

As the mother of a sick child, Cherie says the Adventure Challenge has benefited her and her family in many ways. “Charlie-Anne had only been diagnosed three months prior to my first Adventure Challenge, so it was really a great outlet to direct my focus and energy. All the training really helped clear my head and helped me stay positive in tough times – it still does!”

Adventure Challenge Shawna Correia

Cherie is not the only Canuck Place parent who will be taking part in the Adventure Challenge this September. Shawna and Moe Correia’s son Dominic is also on the Canuck Place program, but unlike Cherie, they will be doing the event for the first time.

“We are really excited to be taking part in the Adventure Challenge for Kids because there are so many children who benefit medically, physically and emotionally from the support of Canuck Place,” Shawna said. “This is the type of fundraiser that everyone should feel great about supporting because there are so many families from around B.C. who depend on the high level of care provided by Canuck Place. Life has been challenging caring for our son, who has so many needs. Taking part in this event is one challenge we chose to take on.”

Adventure Challenge VCB Kayak

Whether signing up as individuals or competing as a team, the Adventure Challenge for Kids will provide participants with a thrilling challenge and a great way to give back to their community.

This September, kayak, bike and run for B.C. children and their families. Be a Courage Builder, and take the challenge!
