The city owned land has been leased by social enterprise SOLEfood for $1 a year. Just like the other SOLEfood urban farm nearby, the orchard will employ people from the Downtown Eastside.

The company operates four other urban farms in the city and combined, the farms produced nearly 30 tonnes of produce last year. They project to double that volume this year.

The urban orchard at Main and Terminal will produce apples, plums, pears, figs, lemons, among others things.

The site, an old gas station, has been vacant for over a decade. It will eventually house an office/residential tower.
