Surrey has big plans for their city centre. In the next decade or so it will become the 4th largest employment centre in the region, behind downtown Vancouver, the Broadway Corridor and Metrotown in Burnaby. And what does every thriving city centre need? Food carts.
Food carts are starting to appear sparsely throughout the Lower Mainland. Surrey, being on of the suburbs, is trying out pilot programs. For the past two summers, Surrey has had “pop up” food carts near SkyTrain stations. That program typically ended in August, but now the city is considering expanding the program year-round.
The suburb of Surrey has been studying the success of other cities such as Vancouver, Portland and San Francisco and their implementation of the food cart program.
Surrey City Council will decide on the matter shortly.
