A major exhibition featuring Douglas Coupland’s work will be on display at the Vancouver Art Gallery during the summer of 2014: from Saturday, May 31 to Monday, September 1.

This is the first-ever exhibition that will display art work from the renowned Vancouver-based artist, designer and author. The title of the exhibition – Douglas Coupland: everywhere is anywhere is anything is everything – refers to Coupland’s relationship with “place, cultural identity and the contemporary era’s ready access to [both] information and technology.”

“Coupland’s work challenges conventional definitions of high and low art, referencing historical artists such as members of the Group of Seven, Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg and Roy Lichtenstein, while also drawing on pop culture, technology and Canadiana to explore “the 21st Century condition.” Working with diverse media – from children’s toys to books to found materials such as plastic lids – he probes the way the things, the images and the processes of contemporary life affect our understanding of the world. The exhibition will be comprised of five thematic sections, including: Canada Noir, which will unravel Canadian cultural identity with paintings, large-scale sculptural installations and building models, and Words into Objects, in which [Coupland] investigates his relationship with text and literature.”
