Michael Jackson Canucks Puck Drop

When this photo first surfaced in 2009, many believed that the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, dropped the puck at the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver on November 16, 1984. The photo is real and has not been photoshopped, but is that the real King of Pop?

To the left is Canucks captain Stan Smyl, to the right is Penguins captain, Mario Lemieux and in the centre, about to drop the puck, is the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, or is it?

Here is what is true:

  • The Canucks did host the Pittsburgh Penguins at the Pacific Coliseum on November 16, 1984. Just in case you’re wondering, the Canucks beat them 7-6.
  • Michael Jackson’s Victory Tour stopped in Vancouver to play three shows on November 16, 17 and 18 at BC Place.

What this photo doesn’t contain is the real King of Pop. According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, it was in fact an impersonator:

“A Michael Jackson look alike dropped the puck for a ceremonial before last night’s National Hockey League game in the Pacific Coliseum while the real pop star was opening with his brothers across town.” ~ Shelley Anderson.

What do you think? Is that the real King of Pop or was it a fake?
