Live in Vancouver : Pandora and the Locksmiths - June 7 & June 11, 2013

Pandora and the Locksmiths

Vancity Buzz sat down with John and Nicky Ninedoors, May 9, 2013 on Main Street in Mount Pleasant, on the patio at JJ Bean. Two hours had passed and it felt like we were old friends. As co-founding members of Pandora and the Locksmiths, both Nicky and John have a deep appreciation for music, instruments and the origins of great vintage sounds. I enjoyed them so much I decided I had to go down to Guilt & Co. and see the live show. Was I ever impressed!

I was not expecting to see a full bar on a Tuesday night at Guilt & Co. But when you showcase a five  piece live jazz band, with the lovely Nicky Ninedoors singing alongside seductive burlesque artists (with guest appearance by The Lady Josephine –Montreal), you can see why this underground cavern was bustling with whisky-lovers and champagne guzzlers.

Guilt & Co. felt a little like Chicago to me. A bit dark and mysterious with the aroma of whisky in the air. I gave the Japanese brand Nikka Yoichi a try – maybe I tried it twice – it was so good.  I enjoyed that the jazz group was playing before the show even started, making sure the sound was perfect. And it was, they sounded brilliant.

Pandora and The Locksmithsa collective group that strives for original, well-produced shows, once a month at Guilt & Co.  After this show I was excited to see the next show June 11, 2013.  I hear that it is a fantastic range from Debussy to Bjork.  Show starts at 8 p.m.

” One fabulous image is worth more than 10 mediocre images – for both performer and photographer. ” Said Nicky remarking on her take away from the burlesque legend Catherine D’Lish at the Vancouver Burlesque Centre.

I admire Nicky’s  sass, even after speaking with the VIBF photographers this year, there must have been a combined 1000 photos to sort through.  Nicky, who is an active board member for the 8th and 9th annual Vancouver International Burlesque Festival, had the pleasure of choosing photographs. We highlighted some of these photo choices in a VIBF photo release for Vancity Buzz.

One of Nicky’s shout outs for making Pandora and the Locksmiths a monthly success was to Jody Bowen, who now is the Vancouver community manager for Yelp.

“She was a big part in the foot hold of the scene, offering security at Guilt and Company,” Nicky said, describing the business savvy Jody Bowen.

Jody Bowen is a huge supporter of the burlesque and art scene. She is fantastic, dynamic, professional and a great supporter of Vancity Buzz and their writers.

So, when we see you at Guilt & Co. on June 11, 2013 checking out the live music, enjoy some smooth whisky served in flights (Auchentoshan Three Wood, Glen Garioch and Bowmore $12) plus the Innis & Gunn ale $10, the avalanche dip  $9.75 and a crème brulee $7.  Meat-lovers can also enjoy the meat and cheese spread $26, roast lamb $13.75 and, yes, even kangaroo tartar $12.75. Arrive early though, seats are limited.

Cannot wait until Tuesday?  I do not blame you. Check out Pandora and the Locksmiths this Friday night!

June 7, 2013 Pandora and the Locksmiths will also perform at the Fanclub on Granville Street.

Pandora and the Locksmiths collective includes Nicky Ninedoors, Burgundy Brixx, Ruthe Ordare, Voracious V, Carole Brunette, Miss Fit, Miss Kiss, Ava Lure, Dalilah Dare and August Wiled.
