Today I sat down with Shelly Lynn Nellis, the editor-in-chief and founder of Vancouver’s Fresh Magazine, a women’s publication on anti-aging, beauty and lifestyle. As an empowering and team-spirited woman herself, Shelly Lynn’s initial vision for Fresh Magazine during its start in 2010 was to create a publication that would empower and support real women.
Shelly Lynn, her team of writers, and her editor, Liberty (whom she praises with enthusiasm!), generate ideas and produce stories of high value and integrity. Fresh Magazine prints honest insight on every important aspect of graceful aging, keeping their stories exciting and they include all relevant topics from cosmetic surgeries to raw food to getting along with (or divorcing!) your spouse.
As the founder and editor in chief, Shelly Lynn’s duties are widespread, but she never undervalues the roles of her team members. With a small group of six, Shelly Lynn has created a community where everyone helps each other out. As a beautiful and successful, yet incredibly modest woman, Shelly Lynn has no trouble admitting she can’t do it all on her own. “I hire people who are better at the things I’m not good at.”
Creating a Balance
But looking closer at her background, one might well assume she is super woman indeed. Starting in her earlier years as a fitness competitor, Shelly Lynn delved into the publication industry with a health magazine she’d created along with her first team.
Now with a six-year-old daughter with multiple severe food allergies, Shelly Lynn manages to balance her work and family life. Having just returned from a tropical vacation with her husband and daughter, Shelly Lynn glows as she tells me of her family life. Not only does she home school her daughter, she also puts her before business and is thankful to have such a wonderfully accommodating team around her. She is currently working alongside her entrepreneurial six-year-old in creating an all-natural girl’s makeup line.
“My daughter is a little entrepreneur in the making!” says Shelly Lynn. “She loves to come up with her own ideas for products and makes notes on how she is going to market them. She has already sold a piece from what she calls Ainslee’s Creations. She even talks about giving back a portion of her profit to charity, specifically Children’s Hospital.”
What is your favorite part of the job?
Although she admits the events and galas that come along with the job are fun, Shelly Lynn says the best part is getting to meet new people.
“It’s one thing to meet someone for five minutes at an event,” she says. “But it’s quite another to sit down with an influential woman and have a real conversation with her.”
Do you have a female role model?
Shelly Lynn had trouble singling out just one. Rattling off a list of well-known names in Vancouver – those who had been featured on the cover of Fresh Magazine – she told me of her sit-downs with inspirational women like Leila Getz, Bif Naked, Mayor Dianne Watts, Leslie Diamond, Jacqui Cohen and Pamela Martin.
“Each and every one of our cover stories has inspired and influenced me in one way or another,” says Shelly Lynn. “The key is that we’re all real women. We all want happy lives with harmony around us, regardless of the turbulences.”
Knowing that the reality of life isn’t all smooth-sailing, Shelly Lynn describes one of her more turbulent experiences: “I grew up with the typical middle child stigma, but from a very early age inside I always knew I was more than just one of the faces in the crowd.”
What piece of advice would you give your younger self?
“My advice to my younger self would be that the mistakes you make today do not define who you are tomorrow.”
Do you have a favorite quote?
Shelly Lynn’s favorite quote is incredibly fitting for her personality, and one coined by the iconic Bob Marley.
“The greatness of a man is not in how much wealth he acquires, but in his integrity and his ability to affect those around him positively”
Shelly Lynn and the team of Fresh Magazine believe in supporting local charity events like the annual Ovarian Cancer Canada event. Fresh Magazine is a sponsor of the Arts Umbrella Indulge, the art of beauty being held at Holt Renfrew, among other events and fashion shows in and around Vancouver.
