Go Gluten-Free at EAT Vancouver (contest)

The bad news: more than 20 Million Canadians suffer from digestive disorders (source: Canadian Digestive Health Foundation). The good news: there has never been a better time to be gluten-free. As awareness of Celiac disease and the “wheat belly” syndrome grow, so do choices for those who suffer from them. Restaurants are becoming more aware and sympathetic, and offering more gluten-free choices, and there are now entire bakeries that are 100 per cent gluten-free.

As someone who loves to bake at home, learning how to bake gluten-free is a big challenge. Unlike other allergies, you can’t just swap out a gluten-free flour for regular flour and expect to have the same results. Many recipes I look at call for ingredients that confound me, like xanthan gum, guar gum, sorghum and other things that make me think “what is that, and where can I even buy it??”

This year’s EAT Vancouver (now in its 11th year!), takes place May 24 to 26 at BC Place Stadium. In addition to lots of things for the non-gluten-free, like top celebrity chefs Chuck Hughes, Rob Feenie, Bal Arneson, and Anna Olson, there is a spotlight this year on gluten-free living. For example, you can take a gluten-free cooking class, hosted by PICA Instructors. In this session, you’ll learn in depth and hands-on, the science of baking without gluten. You’ll learn how to make gluten free margarita-style focaccia and gluten-free cookie dough.

Weston Bakeries will be debuting their new line of All But Gluten gluten-free baked goods at EAT Vancouver. The list includes a hearty grain loaf, a delicious raisin cinnamon loaf, savoury focaccia breads, tasty pizza shell, carrot raisin morning muffin, rich and moist chocolate brownies and perfectly baked coconut macaroons.

Other gluten-free goodness? [in the oven]’s gourmet caramel, Organic Coconut Aminos (a soy sauce replacement),  Hidden Garden Foods, a line of gluten-free cookies with hidden vegetables in them (sneaky mommy!), and Snackbox is a monthly subscription service that sends boxes of premium, well-curated, healthy, gluten-free, and natural snacks that you won’t find just anywhere. Oh, and did I mention gluten-free beer? Yes!! Mongozo Premium Pilsner is the world’s first fair trade, organic, and gluten-free beer.

Other gluten-free exhibitors include Coconama Chocolate, DaiyaFoods, Green and Black’s Organic Chocolate, and Larry and Luna’s Coconut Bliss.
