MuchMusic VJ hopeful represents BC in Top 10

After getting off the phone with aspiring VJ Alexandria MacFarlane, I was overcome with the oddest sensation – giddiness.

With big hair and even bigger dreams, the 20-year-old B.C. Felions Cheerleader is one of the many personalities aboard a colourful bus travelling across Canada, competing in the Much VJ Search.

Swimming in the small pond of Abbotsford for most of her life, the buoyant babe eventually made the jump to Coquitlam and admits that she almost didn’t apply for the competition because she didn’t think she had a chance. “Even where I am at 20-years-old, which may seem young to a lot of people, it all comes down to life experience. I think it depends on your maturity level and how you can handle stress,” says MacFarlane.

And with that, she made a video highlighting her life as a cheerleader, her cat Sophie and the moment she met Justin Bieber.

“I had to sit down, I was crying and blown away that it was actually coming true,” says MacFarlane on discovering she had been chosen for the Top 20. And now, people who she doesn’t even know are messaging her and offering their support on the next half of her journey. “It’s just so heart-warming. . .even if I don’t win it has already given me so much confidence.”

Describing herself as “bubbly, sweet, young and fresh,” MacFarlane says that people should support her because she offers a new dynamic to the station. “They have a lot of edgy, cool, funky people and they don’t have someone like me. I think I would bring a lot of happiness to the show!”

Contestants are eliminated along the route; a decision based on the preferences of current Much VJ’s, contestant ability (conducting interviews, promotions, pop-culture quizzes), fan support and production staff. Or as episode 107 in Ottawa had contestants do: throw one of their own members under the bus with an internal vote-off. A decision that proved to be very difficult.

“It’s a lot different than I thought it would be, going in everyone said not to get too close and not to make friends,” explains MacFarlane, “but it’s crazy how close we are, we are a family. You think you would be happy when someone goes home, but it’s very different in that aspect, because we spend every minute, every second together.”

Also on episode 107 (which proved to be very entertaining) was a classic game of Truth or Dare, provoked by MuchMusic Host and Producer Lauren Toyota.

“Me and Drama are very, very close,” admits MacFarlane (but anyone who has seen recent episodes would know that). “It’s crazy the connection you can make with someone, I feel like I have known him my whole life…”

Besides sugar, spice and everything nice, Alexandria has some other key ingredients that make up a perfect VJ prototype: the ability to entertain people, the desire to meet new people and an insatiable love for music and social media.

“Oh my god, my whole life would change if I won,” exclaims MacFarlane through laughter. “It will be the best thing in the world, and I am so ready for that. It would just open up a whole new chapter of my life, and I want everyone to know that I am so thankful for the support and wouldn’t be here without it.”

The VJ Search program airs nightly at 6 p.m. with Post Show following at 6:30 p.m. The winner will be announced at the Toronto headquarters on April 26. Besides enormous bragging rights, the last VJ standing will receive a three-month contract with MuchMusic.

*The bus made its final stop at MuchMusic in Toronto and on April 11 Alexandria was announced as one of the competitors in the Top 10*
