Dessert Heaven is a series exploring cafes/shops that offer an extensive variety of desserts to satisfy any sweet tooth – from cupcakes and macarons to cheesecakes and cookies. Elegant by day and romantic by night, Luv Cravings is the perfect destination for a sugar fix, whether it be for a simple afternoon pick-me-up or a date with a loved one.
Conveniently located across from the King Edward Canada Line station, Luv Cravings boasts a beautiful interior where classic Parisian decor meets contemporary design. Every customer is bound to find a personal favourite from the wide variety of desserts including cupcakes, cakes, macarons, cookies, loaves, muffins and breakfast items. The owner of Luv Cravings, Sharon Ng, applies her background in merchandising to her creative work in bigger projects such as weddings and special events. Luv Cravings was proud to be a sponsor for the Miss Chinese Vancouver Pageant 2012.
Left to Right: Velvety Goodness Cupcake and Heavenly Hummingbird Cupcake, $2.95 each
The Velvety Goodness Cupcake is Luv Cravings’ version of the classic red velvet cake – a buttermilk cupcake with a hint of cocoa, topped with cream cheese frosting and a dainty cinnamon heart. The cake is dense and slightly on the heavier side, but the subtle taste of cocoa perfectly balances out the remarkably sweet frosting. The Heavenly Hummingbird Cupcake is a banana, coconut and pineapple cake topped with cream cheese frosting and finished with coconut flakes. The strong taste of banana makes the cake similar to traditional banana bread, but more airy and fluffy in texture. The tiny pineapple bits are tangy but not super noticeable so that they don’t outshine the other flavours.
The classic tiramisu cake finds its way into a cup – alternating layers of rich mascarpone and moist cake soaked in coffee, layered with bittersweet cocoa powder and adorned with two delicate ladyfingers. The mascarpone is very creamy in texture yet not overly heavy, while the bitterness of the cocoa powder offsets the sweet & pungent coffee flavour.
Cheesecakes at Luv Cravings are one of Sharon’s personal favourites. Her secret recipe adds a decadent twist to classic popular flavours such as the New York Style Cheesecake and the Chocolate Caramel Cheesecake. The Toasted Walnut Cheesecake features a light cake base filled with walnut pieces, sitting on a thin crust and served with a small dollop of whipped cream. The cheesecake is not too creamy and much lighter compared to traditional New York Style cheesecakes; its texture is more comparable to cake rather than rich cream cheese. The little toasted walnut pieces are subtle and add a nice crunch.
The Matcha Latte is a personal favourite among many customers; the matcha powder isn’t overly bitter which makes it a popular hit even for those who aren’t fans of green tea ice cream. Served in a Japanese-style bowl, this hot drink is sweetened with vanilla and finished off with a thin layer of foam on top.
Aside from all the yummy temptations at Luv Cravings, the staff truly puts the extra effort into making a lasting impression on every customer. Sharon and her team are dedicated to building a menu that appeals to all the diverse food palates. Exotic, mouth-watering cupcake flavours include Tantalizing Taro and Luscious Lychee. Sharon also recommends the increasingly popular afternoon high tea, which features a deluxe assortment of sweet & savoury pastries and a pot of premium loose leaf tea from a selection of over 100 different kinds of tea.
My first visit to Luv Cravings was highly enjoyable and I will definitely be back to try all the other tempting cupcake flavours. If the decor alone isn’t enough to convince you to pay a visit, one glance at the website will definitely change your mind. Thank you, Luv Cravings, for fueling my dessert obsession!
