No doubt Vancouver can be an expensive city, it was stated to be the most expensive city in North America to live in by two recent surveys. It’s also seen by many as a cold, unfriendly city, this is something we noted and dubbed the “Vancouver Complex.” The city is beautiful, but wages for the average person are low and thus this leads to penny pinching isolation just to get by. Enter the proposed Vancouver co-housing project that aims to ease affordability and increase social interaction. Two birds, one stone.
The plan calls for a 31-unit complex that would feature:
a communal dining area
- laundry room
- guest suite
- music room
- exercise studio
- roof-top deck
- indoor play area
- teenagers’ lounge
- bicycle repair room
The majority of the units in the co-housing project will be available for purchases and at a minimum two will be available for rental. Each unit will include its own independent kitchen space and bathroom as well.
The City of Vancouver is attempting to do whatever is in their power (except for changing foreign buyer laws) to increase affordability in the city.
The co-housing development is located along 33rd Avenue between Argyle and Commercial.
The concept of co-housing is popular in Europe as it allows families to live in the city and by it’s very nature is conducive to increasing social interaction.
