Vancouver Park Board wants to control community centres

The Vancouver park board is planning to take control of all community centre revenues in a move that many claim will have a significant impact on the local programming and fundraising efforts of community centres.

If the control switchover takes place the 40-year-old service model that alllows each City of Vancouver community centre to operate semi-independently will no longer exist and control will be handed over to the park board.

Assuming a change of control takes place revenue surpluses from programs and room rentals would flow to the park board. The park board would then decide how to spend such surpluses, if any.

The park board claims that the point of updating the agreement is to provide more equal distribution of funds among the city’s community centres.

On the other hand, the community centre leaders claim that this will seriously hinder their ability to fund raise, maintain local volunteer staff and to provide unique programs for individual neighbourhoods.

Some core programs, like ice skating and swimming differ from those that are market-driven and as such won’t be impacted.

A meeting hosted by the Kerrisdale Community Centre Association is set to take place on Tuesday January, 29, 2013. The purpose of the meeting is to inform the public about how proposed radical changes to the operating structure of Vancouver’s volunteer-run community centres has already impacted, and will continue to impact the programming and increase fees for residents. Park Board general manager Malcolm Bromley has also confirmed his attendance at this public event.
