The Last Crumb Bakery & Café: A Must Visit in Mount Pleasant

Joanne and Julianne Owners of Last Crumb

Life is short, eat dessert – and often! That is the motto from this very cozy bakery owned by two sisters Joanne and Julianne. The Last Crumb Bakery officially opened September 21, 2012 and have been rapidly growing their customer base ever since. They serve up the very best in North American nostalgic baking goods and savory treats. Offering old-fashioned cakes, pies, incredible scones, warm drinks, and lots of gluten free options. After visiting and sampling of course, it was very easy to see why they are now a staple and a must visit in the Mount Pleasant neighbourhood.

Everything in the bakery is made fresh, in small batches, and with no artificial flavoring or preservatives. These delicious desserts are a combination of old classics with a contemporary feel and remind you of the ones grandma use to bake. It’s something that just came natural to Joanne as she recalls her first baking memory from as far back as the age of four when placing a box of rice-crispies on the burner in an attempt to make her favourite rice crispie squares – luckily she didn’t burn the house down. The desire to own her own bakery had been there for over ten years and after great support from friends and family to do so, which is not a traditional backing from most Chinese parents she added, the sisters made the decision to go for it. This happened after being by the side of their Mother during her battle with Pancreatic Cancer.

Being involved in a life and death situation with a loved one really challenges you to look at what it is you really want to accomplish and achieve in life. You need to evaluate how you really want to spend the rest of your time in life.

It was clear to see and feel the passion they have for the business, their employees, and the fact they truly believe that people can do whatever it is they want with their lives.

I love that baking makes people happy and brings joy to people – it’s such a treat for them.

Being in the bakery you can feel the warmth and motivation of the staff to make your stay a welcomed and great experience. It’s evident that Joanne’s strong HR background has come into good use with the support she provides for her staff for their goals and vice-versa. The close-knit feel you strive for in a family oriented business is definitely present. As their business success continues into 2013, I asked what advice they would have for budding entrepreneurs:

Business Advice: You spend a lot of time with your staff, so it’s important to create that reciprocal synergy and having everyone excited and wanting to be there. Also, truly test your product in the market place and get that critical feedback before launching – you need to prove your assumptions right.

In addition to expanding the hours and breakfast item menu this year they will also be launching their High Tea Service which begins on February 14.

HIGH TEA EXPERIENCE:

  • Full Service, with lots of great tea selections
  • Beautiful Space to relax and socialize in
  • Gluten Free and Regular versions of incredible treats to be served
  • Everything made with love and care

To learn more about the High Tea Service or any other their bakery goods, look them up at the links below or better yet, make your over to Main St. and take it all in for yourself. P.S. You may want to try their Bacon, cheddar, scallion scones – simply delicious.
