We first told you about the possible prolonged closure of Metrotown SkyTrain Station during the station’s renovations. Now comes news that the Main Street-Science World SkyTrain Station will be operating one track only closed for 4 months. This will cause lengthy delays, upwards to 10 minutes, in travel times and riders will be urged to plan accordingly.

Each weekday, approximately 26,000 people go through Main Street-Science World Station. Next month, construction will begin on a $30-million, 18 month overhaul of the station.

The station will remain open during most of the construction period as only one side will be closed at a time. However, for four months – from the fall of 2013 to the winter of 2014 one of the stations tracks will be closed and TransLink will operate a two-car shuttle from Commercial-Broadway to Waterfront, making stops at Stadium, Granville, Burrard and of course Main Street.

All other trains will operate normally with the exception of Main Street-Science World Station, which will become a “skip stop”. Think of it as road construction and a two lane, two way road way becomes a single lane and both sides of traffic will have to alternate to get through.

Renovations to Main Street SkyTrain Station will accommodate projected capacity increases, improve circulation, connections to buses, way-finding, lighting and public realm.

The station upgrade is one of seven planned under TransLink’s Expo Line upgrade strategy and is expected to be complete by the summer of 2014.
