There is still a BC Place strike. “The ball is in their court,” says Karen Tankard, communications officer for the B.C. Government and Service Employees Union. Five hundred BC Place employees embarked on a one-day strike on Monday, Jan. 28 and picketers were up late last night as the strike now enters its second day.

The strike is indefinite until Pavco agrees to go back to the table for informal mediation, according to Tankard. There have been no talks between the union and Pavco since last Thursday.

“Our goal is not to have our members on a picket line in January,” says Tankard. “The employer can change that by coming to the table with a new proposal that deals with job security.”

Job security is the main issue for the union as work inside BC Place is being contracted to outsiders.

The Year of the Snake expo is scheduled for setup on Wednesday and opens Thursday through Sunday, as well the Vancouver International Boat Show runs February 7 to 11, according to the BC Place website.
