As the entrepreneurship community at Simon Fraser University continues to grow, the demand for the prestigious title increases.
Going into its fifth year, the SFU Entrepreneur of the Year (SEY) competition recognizes student entrepreneurs with established businesses.
On November 24, 2012, ten SFU entrepreneurs will pitch their business, but only four will move on to the finalist round where they will compete for the funding opportunities, mentorship, business exposure and the chance to be crowned the 2012 SFU Entrepreneur of the Year.
Beyond fostering entrepreneurship at SFU, SEY also connects with the local entrepreneurship community of Vancouver. Every year, the SEY winner is determined by a panel of industry professionals. This year’s panel of judges includes Mike Volker (WUTIF), Janice Abbott (Atira), Pavel Bains (Story Panda), Emad Yacoub (The Glowbal Group), and Judy Brooks (Blo Blow Dry).
In addition, SEY 2012 has partnered with Launch Academy, an local accelerator that focuses on helping tech and online start-up businesses.
“This year’s SEY competition will be remarkable due to the high amount of interest we received,” says Chantelle Buffie program manager. “At first, the response was slow, but as the deadline approached we had a record breaking number of applications.”
“It’s about celebrating the achievements of these entrepreneurs who are not only running a business, but completing their education at the same time.”
The SEY competition winners will be announced during the Awards Ceremony & Networking Reception in which students, local entrepreneurs, and business professionals will have the opportunity to connect.
The 2012 SFU Entrepreneur of the Year Final Competition and Awards Ceremony will be taking place on Saturday, November 24 from 2:00pm-6:30pm at Coast Coal Harbour Hotel.
