The Top 5 Vancouver Comic Shops

By Dean Brookstone | 2 years ago | Speak Up

It’s fairly difficult to find a good comic book store, let alone in a city as large and fragmented as Vancouver. Luckily, I have spent a good chunk of my life sifting through what this town has to offer and am here to tell you about the best Vancouver comic shops.  Each of these comic shops in Vancouver does something special; find out which one best suits you and start working on your collection!

The Best Vancouver Comic Shops (In No Particular Order)

1) The Comic Shop
Location: 3518 West 4th (Dunbar)
Phone: 604-738-8122
Hours: 11-6 (an our or two later on wednesdays and fridays), 12-5 on weekends

- Sell at American price but also have some special deals on high quality books
- Extremely helpful staff, love to help find the right book for you or just talk comics
- No used section unfortunately
- Very good stock of old back issues
- Good selection of graphic novels
- Great shelf of staff picks, highlighted authors and fantastic organization make browsing a dream

2) Golden Age Collectibles
Location: 852 Granville Street (right by the Vancouver City Center Canada Line)
Phone: 604-683-2819
Hours: Monday to saturday 10-9, sundays + holidays 11-6

- Great location: downtown Vancouver right by the Canada line
- Huge selection of graphic novels
- Small selection of books marked down in price, not very many good ones though
- If you are looking for something in particular and haven’t been able to find it anywhere else, this is the place to go
- Also carry collectibles of course
- Nice shelf of “Staff picks” to help get you going
- Very expensive, sometimes even more than cover price – what do you expect in downtown Vancouver?

3) ABC Book and Comic Emporium
Location: 1539 West Broadway
Phone: 604-682-3019
Hours: monday-saturday 11-7pm, sunday 12-7

- Fantastic prices on comic books (40% off a large selection of graphic novels)
- Insanely large selection, but a lot of garbage in there as well: make sure you have lots of time on your hands
- If you are claustrophobic, try somewhere else
- Also bring in the newest books and sell at american price but for full cost
*On a sad note, ABC Book and Comic Emporium is closing down at the end of November

4) Rx Comics
Location: 2418 Main Street (Main and 8th)
Phone:
604-454-5099
Hours: Tuesday – saturday 11-7, Sundays and holidays 12-6, closed Monday

- HUGE selection of new graphic novels/latest issues of comics – BUT you cant look at the graphic novels to see if you are interested in them because they are all sealed in plastic
- Sell at american price
- Sell collectibles as well (t-shirts, action figures)
- Have a used book corner with some fairly decent steals (that aren’t covered in plastic)
- Usually have a deal running (such as 20% off a particular publishing brand like IDW or Image Comics)

5) Pulp Fiction Books
Location: 2422 Main Street (8th and Main)
Phone: 604-876-4311
Hours: Mon-Wed 10am-8pm, Thu-Sat 10am-9pm, Sunday 11am-7pm
*3 locations – main and broadway has the most graphic novels

- Tons of used graphic novels at an insane discount (like 60% off hardcover omnibuses – it doesn’t get better then that) but with a catch: you need to know what you are looking for because there is a ton of junk as well
- Staff are there primarily to service for books, aren’t specifically knowledgable about comics. You are on your own.

More Information about Vancouver Comic Shops

As a final footnote, if you have little to no knowledge of comic books or don’t really know what to look for, pulp fiction and ABC are not a great place to start. Stick with the straight-up comic shops like The Comic Shop or Golden Age; the staff will be far more knowledgeable and able to give you recommendations (or at least point you in the right direction).

If you want some suggestions about reading material, take a look at some of Vancity Buzz Comic’s previous posts on Graphic Weekends (our week-endly graphic novel reccomendation). There are a ton of great books that have already been covered like Batman, Fables, and Locke & Key - and plenty more to come.

Happy hunting!

Thanks for the heads up! I can’t keep up with how often they seem to be changing their closing date haha.

Hey VCB, comic books are great but they are not really popular anymore. If you want to do a story then start doing your research on retro gaming! It has exploded in the last few years and its very popular especially with a big community in the lower mainland. Their are some great retro video game stores and some not so great video game stores. Plus the retro game expo that happens every year sells out! Everyone is hunting for retro video games, not so much comic books anymore. Their is a reason why comic books sell for dirt cheap now cause the dont appeal to the demographic anymore.

Aren’t these the only 5 comic shops in Vancouver? Easy to be in the top 5 when…

  • ran

pulp fiction should not be on there
they are a book store with a tiny collection of graphic novels
    central comics in surrey
    big pete’s in north vancouver

….What about Lucky’s Comics on Main? Best comic shop in Vancouver IMO.
