Vancouver band Portage & Main have organized a charity hockey tournament for September 22nd, as part of their participation in the 2012 Peak Performance Project.

Portage & Main, a local folk rock band, were recently selected to participate in the 2012 Peak Performance Project. Hosted by 102.7 The Peak, this competition sees hundreds of bands and singers whittled down to a top 20. This top 20 is then narrowed to five acts, with the winner receiving $102,700. Each band gets the opportunity to work with industry experts to help further their chances of breaking into the big times, including participation in a week-long bootcamp where the top 20 learn about everything from how to book a tour, how to pursue publishing or record deals, and how to brand and market your act. The Peak Performance Project has produced many talented acts, including past winners We Are The City, Kyprios and Current Swell.

As part of participating in the Peak Performance Project, each band must produce an event to raise money for the charity of their choice. Rather than just organizing a concert for their event, Portage & Main decided to change it up and create a charity hockey tournament that is open to everyone. The event, Cup for Kids, will take place on Saturday, September 22nd starting at noon at Memorial South Park, on East 41st between Knight Street and Fraser Street. Team will consist of five people, with four playing at a time and one substitute, and will take place in the Lacrosse Box. All teams must bring their own gear. Registration is $100 per team, with proceeds from the tournament supporting KidSport Canada, a Canadian organization that works to ensure that every child has the opportunity to play organized sports through the removal of financial barriers to participation and encourages the development of healthy lifestyles from a young age. Interested participants can find more details on how to register on the event’s Facebook page. With a BBQ, music, prizes, a silent auction, a 50/50 draw, and much more to complement the main tournament, it is sure to be a fantastic day.

Portage & Main plan on touring Canada next Spring, which will be definitely worth checking out. In the mean time, they are playing a show on Thursday, October 18th at the Red Room with three of their fellow Peak Performance Project finalists. Doors open at 8, and tickets are only $12, ensuring that this show will sell out fast. Tickets can be purchased on the Peak Performance Project website. They are also currently doing a video series on YouTube where the band covers songs that fans suggest on their Facebook page. Check out their covers of Queen’s Fat Bottomed Girls and Calvin Harris’ Feel So Close below.
