Denman Cinema closing for good at the end of September
The Straight is reporting that Denman Cinema, in Vancouver’s West End, will be shutting its doors for good at the end of September 2012. The owner of the building has sent notification that the cinema’s short term lease will not be renewed. Another cultural blow and somewhat of shocking turn of events as the Cinema was seeing a resurgence and recently went through some renovations.
Not only does it hurt to lose a cultural landmark, it’s reportedly being replaced with a Dollarama, ouch. More than likely the Dollarama is a temporary addition, look for that building to be redeveloped soon. A similar scenario is being played out at the corner of Alberni and Thurlow, that Dollar Store is also said to be temporary until that retail gets redeveloped.
Since the theatre re-opened its doors, the community has thrown huge support behind it. It will end it’s run with Vancouver Retro Cinema Fest, which runs from September 23 to the 30, 2012.
