Canucks jersey ranked 17th in ESPN power rankings

By Vancity Buzz Staff | 2 years ago | Speak Up

Free Willy, the beloved Orca whale that is on our teams jersey, was ranked the 17th best jersey in the NHL. The number one spot went to the Montreal Canadiens and rightfully so. It’s clean, crisp and has history and tradition behind it. On the other hand, our logo and uniforms seems to go through an identity crisis every five years. There is even talk of bringing in the Vancouver Millionaires jersey as a future third jersey

Free Willy! The problem here isn’t the Orca logo, which has actually developed a little bit of gravitas after 15 years (can you believe it’s been that long?). The problem is the city name, which doesn’t belong on the jersey and needs to go.

The top NHL jersey’s according to ESPN:

  1. Montreal Canadiens
  2. Boston Bruins
  3. New York Rangers
  4. Detroit Redwings
  5. Philadelphia Flyers
  6. Toronto Maple Leafs
  7. Pittsburgh Penguins
  8. Minnesota Wild
  9. Columbus Blue Jackets
  10. New Jersey Devils

I’m a Canucks fan and a graphic designer so trying to be objective here. I agree that the Canucks have always struggled with jersey design and I couldn’t agree more with the author’s comment about “Vancouver” looking out of place on the front. It seems so much like VANOC had a hand in this decision… “hey!, we hosted the Olympics. Let’s remind everyone that the Canucks are from Vancouver!” #17 is about right. We deserve much better.

Rivalries aside, the entire Adams, and Patrick division jerseys are all favourites of mine (google it kiddies), with Chicago, St. Louis, Boston, Detroit, Montreal and Toronto being the all-time classics. Philly is ranked kind of high for having such a Post-modern graphic (dated like the old Whalers jersey). The Canucks’ hockey stick is about as PoMo as it gets.

Least favourites: Dallas Stars’ underwhelming type play and bland, black and green bruise colour scheme (yawn); Hurricane’s atrocious puck storm; Calgary’s modified Helvetica C; Panther’s foreshortened (spinal injury withered) cat; and Tampa’s seriously awful oblique, all-caps typography (which reeks of the owner’s grankids’ creation).

Alas, I’ve not been objective at all. Give me a jersey designed before 1968 and I’ll usually be happy.

no chicago in the top 10?

The Canucks’ home and away jerseys deserve to be ranked where they are.  The blue and green are great colours and represent Vancouver and BC perfectly.  It’s the orca that has long overstayed its presence.  It’s time to make Johnny Canuck the primary identity.  The name of the team is “Canucks”, not “Orcas”.  The “VANCOUVER” has to go as well.  A return to the block-style numbers would be a welcome addition as well.

The Canucks’ home and away jerseys deserve to be ranked where they are.  The blue and green look great together and represent Vancouver and BC perfectly.  It’s the orca that has overstayed its presence.  It’s time to make Johnny Canuck the primary identity.  The name of the team is “Canucks”, not “Orcas”.  The ‘VANCOUVER’ wordmark has to go as well.  A return to the block-style number font would be a welcome addition too.  If these corrections are made, the Canucks’ look would be in the top 10 without question.

Forgot to proof-read and tried to delete this initial post before re-typing it.  Unfortunately, couldn’t delete it.  Sorry for the somewhat double post.

forget the millionaires i wanna see the Flying Skate for a 3rd jersey. Black jerseys look so much better. Or even have a new jersey, the same style with the orca but instead of blue have black and take away the words vancouver
