Vancouver doorway turned into giant R2D2

This is an awesome piece of street art that was installed 2010, nearby the BC Hydro Building in downtown. What was once an ugly red doorway turned into a large representation of R2D2, perhaps one of the greatest robots of all time. Not sure if this is still there or if the anti street art squad got rid of it.

Update: Several sources have stated that the installation was taken down in 2010. Nonetheless, this is still cool.

I biked by here today and unfortunately your sources were correct, it’s back to being an ugly red doorway again. How anyone can look at that boring door and tell me that R2D2 was not a huge improvement is beyond me. Who makes the decisions to get rid of beautiful street art like this? I just noticed that a Johnny 5 (the robot from short circuit) street art piece at Main and Terminal is now gone as well (there’s a picture of it online at least: http://lifeofpa.tumblr.com/post/26943872022/short-circuit-street-art-80s-babies-will-relate).

Whoever does make those decisions needs to travel to San Francisco, Berlin, Amsterdam, Copenhagen etc. to see the effect art can have in livening up any city street corner, doorway, alley, or bridge.
