The International Village Elementary School has got the green light to proceed. It will be complete by 2015 and once built will help alleviate some of the pressure for parents living in downtown Vancouver trying to find a school close by. I don’t think 20 years ago anyone foresaw new inner city schools being opened up.

From The Vancouver School Board

The Vancouver School Board is on track to build a new elementary school located in the north end of False Creek. The announcement was part of a $353 million school capital plan announcement by the Provincial Government on Monday.

“This is an incredibly exciting announcement for the Board,” said Patti Bacchus, Chair of the VSB. “The district has been pushing for this school for years. It’s very satisfying to see all of this hard work pay off.”

International Village Elementary has been included in VSB capital plan submissions for the past decade. Since 2009, it was identified as the district’s highest priority capital project. Total cost of the project is estimated at around $16.7M.

The new elementary school will be integrated into a mixed use residential development at the corner of Abbott Street and Expo Boulevard and have a student capacity of 60K + 450 Gr 1-7, with a maximum building area of approximately 4434 sq m. The school site is designed to accommodate a 3 storey building and outdoor play areas and field are located in the adjacent Andy Livingston Park.

“International Village Elementary will be built right in the middle of one of our city’s fastest growing neighbourhoods,” says Bacchus. “The need has been there for years – now the funding is there as well.”

The school will help the district accommodate the estimated 16,000 residents in the area. The International Village Elementary funding is one of a string of capital projects recently kicked-off or completed by the VSB.
