Update: According to twitter & FB chatter from employees it is indeed true. A call was placed to their office and we got no answer.

The closure of Radical Entertainment (a subsidiary to Activision Blizzard) is another blow to Vancouver’s video game industry. It’s sad to see a Vancouver video game staple go.

The gaming studio is located near Main and Terminal and employs over 145 people. Their latest release PROTOTYPE 2 received praise from gaming mags and websites but was a commercial flop. This will be a sequel to PROTOTYPE 1, Radical’s first original property, released in 2009.

Activision has confirmed that Radical Entertainment is shutting down. Their statement via Kotaku:

Although we made a substantial investment in the Prototype IP, it did not find a broad commercial audience. Radical is a very talented team of developers, however, we have explored various options for the studio, including a potential sale of the business, and have made a difficult conclusion through the consultation process that the only remaining option is a significant reduction in staff. As such, some employees will remain working for Radical Entertainment supporting other existing Activision Publishing projects, but the studio will cease development of its own games going forward.

It will be weird not seeing the giant red sign lit up. All the best to the people that lost their jobs.
