Martial arts and massages – not your conventional pairing but Shangri-La Vancouver’s CHI, the Spa has a way of making it come together in a blissful way.

Just in times for warmer weather and active lifestyles Chi, The Spa has introduced wushu body wisdom massages. Ideal for active bodies, these specialized massages are inspired by wushu martial arts stretching and restorative post-activity care methods. Offered in three treatments – wushu toxin release, wushu stress relief and wushu problem area – the massages integrate stretching, a bamboo rod and the usual Shangri-La standard of quality.

The wushu massage is nothing short of what you would typically expect from Shangri-La. You just know their services have been carefully thought through when the therapists asks you to breathe in deeply to start the service, only to find your nasal passages delightfully surprised with scented oils that she has rubbed on her hands and placed below your nose. I knew at that moment that it would be a great 90 minutes.

But let’s go back 10 minutes and delve on how martial art is integrated. The wushu body wisdom massages starts unconventionally with 5-10 minutes of guided stretching and breathing exercises that incorporates a large bamboo rod. Once your meridians are open and muscles are softened for massage, the therapist steps out and you proceed to the bed for the massage component of the experience. The therapist will then again alternative between massage techniques using the bamboo rod and hand massage.

The bamboo rod added a nice unexpected element to your experience providing therapy that a pair of trained hands wouldn’t be able to typically provide. 90 minutes will go by far too quickly and you’ll be awaken with a gentle ring of a bell to perk your ears and a refreshing spritz of fresh water to your face.

Treatments range in price from $160 to $255 and is available exclusively in Vancouver at CHI.
