orjan-nilsen-Red Room-Vancouver

On Saturday night of May long weekend, Norwegian trance superstar Orjan Nilsen played a lively two-and-a-half hour set at Red Room. His loyal fans were out in force to witness his first performance in Vancouver and he did not disappoint. Orjan served up a powerful set packed full of driven progressive trance hits with only a handful of vocal tracks sprinkled in.

He arrived on stage at half past midnight and quickly took control of the crowd, proving why he has become such an accomplished DJ over the last few years. People rushed to the dance floor as he launched into his set with a swift progressive beat that would set a vigorous pace for the rest of the night. He played all of his major hits, including “Between The Rays,” “Belter,” “Amsterdam,” and even one of his older tracks, “La Guitara,” but the highlights were certainly the breakneck beats of “Viking” and “Lucky Strike.” On top of those stellar tracks, some of the best moments came at the rare vocal interludes. Gareth Emery’s “Concrete Angel” was massive, as was Tiesto’s remix of “Silence” (by Sarah McLachlan) and towards the end of his set he played a stirring female vocal mix of “Lose Somebody,” by Kings Of Leon.

It always adds a lot to the experience of a show when the DJ is dynamic during their performance and throughout the night Orjan actively engaged with the fans, even donning a plastic viking helmet at one point. He moved with the music and mimed each chord in the air like a maestro leading a symphony. It was an excellent show and a thrilling night. Considering Orjan’s growing popularity internationally I think we were very lucky to see him in such an intimate setting and would not be surprised to see him packing a much larger venue when he one day returns to Vancouver.
