Prototype 2 and Sleeping Dogs' Live Action Trailers

Two Vancouver studios are releasing open-world games in 2012 and both have already released live-action trailers for their action adventure games. Though there are some similarities, like state of the art combat gameplay, they each offer entirely different experiences. One game is about a superhuman shape shifter with unlimited power, and the other is about an undercover cop trying to topple a Hong Kong gang from the inside.

Radical Entertainment releases Prototype 2 tomorrow (Tuesday, April 24th). Their imaginatively supercharged game puts you in control of a vengeful superhuman in New York City after a deadly virus. The live action trailer has been viewed on YouTube over 2 million times in 1 week and I think that has a lot to do with the vibe and delivery of the video.

You are put into the mind of Sgt. James Heller where you’re given a taste of his past and motives. The Johnny Cash background music is killer and sets a dreary and intense tone. Many more trailers and videos can be found on Radical’s website, including developer interviews that provide you a closer look at the game and the carnage that waits. The interviews really show the thoughtful care Radical has put into this sequel and they underline that Radical Entertainment has listened and responded to Prototype fans.

United Front Games’ trailer for Sleeping Dogs takes an entirely different direction.  The game had a great response at PAX East recently, and the buzz it created resonated through the internet on forums, magazines and gamer TV shows in North America. As a warning, the trailer is violent. It recreates the Hong Kong action movie vibe that the game successfully achieves.

I find myself showing people this video because its accurate it portrayal of the game’s intense action and how it fluently switches back and forth to gun fights, then to a high speed motorcycle chases through crowded streets. Every component of the game is carefully made. Everything from the hand to hand combat, racing, story videos and each little detail used in the recreation of Hong Kong itself are impressive to see. The release date was recently announced for August 2012, which is right around the corner.
