Despite what many believe, there is a lot of money in Vancouver. Visit Holt Renfrew, Harry Rosen, Louis Vuitton (the largest one in Canada) and you’ll find they are full of shoppers ready to plunk down thousands of dollars to get the latest high end fashions. This reputation hasn’t gone unnoticed and has convinced the world’s biggest outlet mall developer McArthurGlen to come to Vancouver. The plan is to build a 340,000 square foot outlet mall that will have the world’s leading fashion brands all in one place. The mall will also contain a movie theatre. This is the first such project in North America for McArthurGlen and it’s coming to Sea Island.

The Vancouver Airport Authority is currently in talks with London-based developer McArthurGlen to bring a premium outlet centre to Sea Island (Vancouver Airport Authority has control over Sea Island). The site of the proposed Sea Island outlet mall is next to the BCIT campus on Russ Baker Way.

YVR board of directors are expected to finalize the plan by June. Once finalized it will bring more jobs and is expected to become a destination shopping centre. Will it lure those that frequent the Seattle Premium Outlets? Only time and cost of items will tell, however, keep in mind that this development in Vancouver is expected to be far more upscale than the outlets in Seattle.

This project is just one of many slated for Sea Island. Also on tap are preliminary plans to build a 250-room hotel and business park near Templeton Station. A new 700,000 square foot Canada Post facility is also under construction. That is expected to be complete by 2014.

Some of the McArthurGlen retailers are:

  • Armani
  • Ballantyne
  • Blumarine
  • Bottega Veneta
  • Brioni
  • Bruno Magli
  • Bulgari
  • Burberry
  • Calvin Klein

Hurrah, another tacky mall. However, there’s nothing asians love more than buying “status wear” at discounted prices, so it’s a pretty solid business plan. Unfortunately, business and taste do not often coincide.

  • Nick

Who is this developer and why would the airport authority let this company with no track record in N. America come into Canada and build a lame azz outlet that only caters to Asians and their bling on a decent piece of land in Richmond?

  • Shopper

Nick obviously hasn’t shopped enough to know the “Premium Outlet” brand…

  • Simon

Nick and Hater should do their research prior to opening their possibly bigoted mouths.  Asians purchase at full price.  They are the ones keeping Vancouver alive.  They want what is hot now and will pay, unlike the locals that nickel and dime retailers.  Asians are consumers and don’t waste associates time.  The outlets will be full of pathetic people who envy those that have.  Be happy the Asians are here.

  • Hater

Be happy the Asians are here? Are you fucking serious? They’re the reason Vancouver real estate is now unaffordable to those who were born and raised here. Not that I blame them, it’s our own fault for not putting restrictions on foreign real estate investments. And on a personal level, I think these new arrivals are tacky as hell. They all have the same fluffy white dogs, only white or black cars, they all wear the same style of clothing, and they speak the only foreign language I actually find irritating (and it’s extremely irritating). In short, the Chinese people lack individuality, or any redeeming qualities that enrich our society. Considering their whole goal in life is to earn status, I share absoluetly no values with these superficial half-people. So excuse me if I don’t exactly enjoy their presence. Don’t get your PC panties in a knot, I’m sure the feelings are mutual on their side, since they do have a pretty well earned reputation for being one of the most racist cultures around. That is the only thing we have in common. Yes, I am justifiably, naturally, and quite comfortably anti-Chinese. Bring more Japanese.

Keeping Vancouver alive? Or turning Vancouver into a resort city (http://www.vancitybuzz.com/2012/01/vancouver-will-be-resort-city-unless/)

  • Canadian

It’s true that asians, at least the subsample of Chinese coming to Vancouver from Hong Kong, have an insatiable lust for material things. Slap a brand name on something, and they’re all over it. Having so much pressure to be successful and accepted among themselves, it seems they have lost sight of what success really means – no it’s not driving German cars. The “hater” poster makes valid observations, but where we differ is that I don’t hate Chinese people. I don’t particularly find anything attractive about them either, but that has more to do with a language and cultural barrier than hate or ignorance per se. Should we be glad they’re here? I don’t know. Maybe this will eventually lead to a unique local culture where all the currently segregated races will have interbred enough to smash those walls down. I look to Brazil for hope in that regard. Beautiful people and culture, there.

I can see why you would say people believe there is no money in Vancouver, Majority of your readers are teenagers, and folks that live pay check to pay check. Your “following” seems to dream bigger than whats in there bank accounts.

As far as these clowns making fun of Chinese people.., The Chinese have more culture and courage than you idiots. Your white culture consists of drinking beer, watching hockey, tweeting and eating hamburgers.

  • Get

Yes, because money is everything. The amount of money in your bank account is literally your your net worth. It sums up who you are. I hope you have a lot of money!

  • Hater

This is why the Chinese culture doesn’t seem to have a lot of fans outside of China. Thousands of years of history, yet only gun powder, “The Art of War”, and a billion clones to show for it. Next time you get into your German car, or put your daughter in classical piano lessons, or read a science text book, think to yourself which people are responsible for bringing these things to this planet.

  • Greg

I’m not going to make the same mistake as you and assume that I have a larger bank account, but the odds are fairly high that I do. I earned better grades than most, worked hard in university, completed a master’s degree, and I’m now in the real world earning an excellent salary. I also watch hockey and drink the occasional beer. I also eat a hamburger from time to time, but I’ve never tweeted.

Let me tell you something, Dal. I agree to a certain point with others on here that have expressed some dislike for the Chinese people. Comments like yours only add to this distaste. It’s true that Chinese people value different things in life. This doesn’t make you inferior, just different. Do I have to like these differences? No. Should I accept them and learn to live with them? Absolutely.

  • coco

I would never shop there, and most people I know won’t either. I agree, this will be a place just for the Asians to shop at.

  • West

ROFL the chinese should look to the Japanese for asian lessons

  • Bbehnia11

Just because you typical insular Vancouver man never read anything, traveled anywhere, nor cared to know about the world outside of Vancouver, doesn’t mean that this British developer is not well known. Go read something before talking your typical Vancouver trash talk! If you also can’t afford to buy quality products, and have no good future, then don’t blame the Asians for bringing their money into this society and spending them so that you can work at starbucks and not starve!

  • Bbehnia11

Sad to see so many racist and ill wishing comments here against people of Asian decent. I, as a person with immigrant parents (not Asian) find this troubling and sad. Seeing how the so called “locals” see the world is disheartening! Makes me more determined to leave this place one day for brighter pastures!

  • Mike

AHAHAHAHA, somebody has never worked in sales or retail.  Every time I have had to sell something to a Chinese person the first thing out of their mouth is “Hmmm, but about the price?” or “Any deals going on?”  Chinese don’t nickel and dim or waste “associates” time…..are you on crack?  Obviously you have never been to Hong Kong either. Frankly, this is not racist, it’s fact, and Chinese will readily admit they like deals.  You are actually insulting them by saying they are too stupid to know a deal or to negotiate.

  • Mike

Which Chinese?  Those from Hong Kong?  Mainland?  Taiwanese?  Han?  You are making the same mistake:  Lumping a group of people into a box and labelling them all the same.

  • Anonymous

It’s pretty stupid to assume that if someone doesn’t like that stuff, then that means they have “no future”, it’s not like he even said that it was too expensive or not. To suggest brands like Prada and Calvin Klein don’t cheap out and make their goods in China is madness. I like quality stuff, but those brands don’t have it any more. Sure, I can afford this stuff, but it’s bland, tacky garbage. Until Vancouver gets Holts replaced by Barneys NY, I’ll go to Gastown, thanks.

  • VancouverITE

I agree..I’ve been living in the downtown core for over two years now & I am sick & tired of these young chinese immigrant’s pompous attitudes and refusal to communicate w/ anyone else outside of their own culture or anyone who is not “useful” to them. I’d like to add that my best friend is asian & we have both ranted and raved about this same topic many times!

    So how about them apples?

If an asian  who was born and raised here is complaining about her own culture, then that’s pretty bad wouldn’t you say? Yes, Government policies have made HUGE mistakes. My family came here with nothing in the 50′s and guess what? They had to assimilate in every way & even learn English! Ah, what a concept eh??! I blame this city for many of the problems we have today due to “loose” immigration policies resulting in ridiculous real estate prices, lack of job opportunities, cultural segregation, I could go on and on. I want to point out that this is directed to recent immigration after the Hong Kong 1980′s boom.. NOT to the older immigrants who came here between the 1950′s – 1970′s because they loved Canada & wanted to build a better life for themselves & their family. They are some of the most friendly, caring, hardworking people I have ever met.

  • Z Z

Of course they have more culture, they live in a homogeneous society.

  • Z Z

“Lumping a group of people into a box and labelling them all the same”  Really? The native indians do that to Caucasians all the time.  How many times have you heard them blame the ‘white man’ for their problems and point to one like that individual was around 400 years ago?  Food for thought: just because one black guy robs a store doesn’t mean all black guys are going to do it.

  • Olicar Yin

    You know Japanese people radiate

  • Olicar Yin

So misguided its not even funny. So many generalizations that just aren’t true. I’d like to see evidence that they are the most racist. You most likely live in Vancouver Canada. Calm down. You have no ghetto. You must be some spoiled liberal yeah?

No, we don’t.  I have many Chinese friends (or Chinese Canadian friends – doesn’t even matter) here in Vancouver, and yes, you’re right, they are not at all racist like you, sucker.
