The Vancouver Special, for those of us born and raised in the Lower Mainland we know all too well about these homes that litter the east side and sporadically appear on the city’s west side. Although under appreciated at the time (majority were built between 60′s and late 80′s), today home buyers and investors seek them as they maximize living space in a standard 33 x 12o city lot. Many homeowners have renovated these architectural icons and here is an example of one that circulated through architecture sites a few years back.

Chris Doray and Arno Matis from Vancouver, Canada’s Iconstrux Architecture provided a complete redesign for this 1960′s “Vancouver Special” house in Vancouver’s Dunbar neighbourhood.

    Beautiful.

this article is about 3 years too late… that house was listed for over 2 million in 2008-2009 when it went up for sale.

So I guess you didn’t read the last line in the paragraph? wow 2 million for reals?

regardless, I doubt anyone in Vancouver living in a Van Special is looking to do this kind of reno… this cost just over $800,000 to do. I don’t know too many people living in a van special with that kinda $$$ to throw around on a fixer-upper.

But there are people who look specifically for Vancouver Specials just so they can do something like this.

Oh my goodness!  That might be the best Vancouver Special redo I’ve ever seen.  Gosh I wish that all of those specials could be redone.  They have so much potential.  Nice post.
