The following proposal by GBL Architects for 955 East Hastings Street is exactly what this side of the city needs. Dense midrise buildings with a little architectural flair and nod to the neighbourhoods industrial roots.  The application proposes a mixed use development includes the regular commercial uses at street level. However, where this deviates from the norm is the use of light industrial at street level.

The building will consist of three mid-rises ranging from 10 to 12 storeys in height. The residential component will have 282 market units and 70 non-market housing units. If priced right, this can be a catalyst for the neighbourhood as the push towards the east continues.

Like the concept but not the design, it does nothing to keep Strathcona’s historical look. The design would better suite the area around BC Place. It would be awesome if the same idea would embrace a historical look, that would be amazing! Wonder at 12 stories all the views they will cut out.

    View protectionism is so short-sighted.

The only thing I don’t like about the design, along with most mid rise designs in the city, is the use of machine room-less elevators. Very problematic for the end users and not worth the cost savings to the contractor…sigh.

The word “neighbourhoods” in that piece should have an apostrophe.
