Here is a neat 3d model of downtown Vancouver that includes buildings that have either been approved or in the proposal phase. Credit goes to Dleung (via SSP) for taking the time to put this together. In total there are currently 25 + high rise projects (low rise were not included) in the downtown core, not including crosstown, Gastown and Chinatown. Furthermore, you can see there is still plenty of room for redevelopment within the downtown peninsula, which is reassuring as more and more people pile continue into Vancouver.

These days it’s equally impressive to see the number of cranes seen in the Olympic Village and in East Vancouver. The future of development is coming to a neighbourhood near you whether you like it or not.

  • Blue = Proposed

Vancouver I miss the old days of early 1970s when my buddies and I would drive up on Friday night visit the night life. Sadly those days are gone.

There really isn’t “plenty of room for development” downtown.  The areas that look to be lowrise are either historic areas (Yaletown) or under view cones (the middle of downtown south).  Granville St. is also limited by a view cone from the crest of the bridge.

I would agree with the statement “plenty of room for development”. In particular the historic, Yaletown, Grandville, areas are perfect opportunities for development. I do not personally know the rules and regulation involved in these areas regarding development, however, i could see this being a very good opportunity. If there was a way to preserve the original structure while building new structures above and around, it could create marvels or architecture and beauty the likes of which cant be viewed otherwise. If it could be done, might as well do it. More density, less freeways is the BC way.
