You may have already heard of Herro Hachi as they are definitely making their mark with their hilarious and fashionable t-shirt designs. We got a chance to chat with Kym, owner and designer of Herro Hachi, and ask her a few questions about being an entrepreneur. She’s one funny lady who’s answers we definitely enjoyed!
“Herro Hachi makes t-shirts that laugh with you, not at you. We believe that you can make someone laugh without sacrificing style and dignity (okay, maybe a little dignity), which is why our philosophy is to make funny fashionable for everyone.”
VCB: How did you come to start your business?
I was working a 9-5 office job and I really wanted a creative outlet… something that would allow me to do something I’m passionate about and something that (in the long run) would allow me to do things I’ve always dreamt of doing (i.e. travel around the world).
VCB: What sets Herro Hachi apart from other t-shirt lines?
I believe it’s our customers that set us apart. We don’t just attract one type of customer – we have customers of all ages, male/female, different races, different lifestyles. I love being at shows and having a 60 year old “get” what the brand is and purchase a shirt for themselves!
VCB: What has been the most challenging thing about starting your own business?
Starting a business requires finances, whether it’s a little or a lot. I’ve had to take risks, make adjustments and lifestyle changes to get started but the sacrifice has definitely been worth it!
VCB: What were you doing before you started your business?
I studied Marketing & Tourism at BCIT and put the Tourism aspect to use by working at different hotels. Then I put the Marketing/Business aspect to use when I landed a job at the School of Business at UBC.
VCB: What does Herro Hachi mean to you?
To me, Herro Hachi means I can inspire others to chase after their dreams. It means I can show people, young and old, that hard work will get you places. It means that I can give back. It means that through my dreams coming true, I can also hopefully make the dreams of those around me come true.
VCB: Where would you like to see your business 5 years from now?
One of my best sellers, “Herro Around the World” explains it well – i would love to see Herro in stores around the world!
VCB: What is the most unique thing about your business?
Herro Hachi is unique because not only does it celebrate cultures, it makes you laugh at the same time.
VCB: We think your t-shirts are hilarious, but what do you say to people who are unsure about whether or not they should wear a shirt that says “Herro” or “Dericious” on it?
I always tell them it’s “all in good fun” and assure them little asians will not come and beat them up for wearing one of our shirts.
