Robson Street: New Stores Opening Soon on Vancouver’s Iconic Retail Street

Vancouver Canada News Robson Street: New Stores Opening Soon on Vancouver’s Iconic Retail Street

Every city has that one street, a street filled with pedestrians, shopping and of course very high rents. Montreal has rue Sainte-Catherine, NYC has Fifth Avenue (among others) and we in Vancouver have Robson Street. Love it or hate it, it’s the street most people outside the city associate with Vancouver. It is our most famous street and in the coming year Robson Street will see a revival of sorts, as new, highly coveted, retailers set to open up shop. In the new year retailers such as J. Crew, Apple, Forever 21 will be adding to the retail mix, plus a few other surprises.

As I walked along Robson the other night (I avoid it during the day as it’s far too crowded with slow walkers), I noticed that Tommy Hilfiger has shut its doors. This, as we reported in late 2011, will make way for J.Crew. Vancouver’s first of possibly two J.Crew locations in the near future (another one is believed to be opening at Pacific Centre).

A crane has been hovering over Robson Street (between Burrard and Thurlow), that crane is for the new Forever 21. Forever 21 has been under construction for months and is slated for a spring 2012 opening. The store will be massive and the city of Vancouver’s first. Right next door to Forever 21 will be Vancouver’s Apple Flagship store, only the second flagship location in Canada. The highly talked and rumoured about Apple flagship is finally coming. No word yet if it will be two floors or not. Furthermore, there are rumours that when that opens the Pacific Centre location will be closed. Only time will tell.

Then there are the many rumours about the soon to be old HMV spot. Rumours are circulating that Simons (Quebec fashion retailer) or Urban Outfitters are looking to take the space. Only time will tell.

In the past year rents have come down from the highs just before the Olympics. However, Robson Street still remains Canada’s third most expensive street and it looks to continue it’s role as the premier street in Vancouver.

Please let it be Simons, what a great retailer

I’m still campaigning for Uniqlo and Muji to open up here. Damnit, no more shitty quality & expensive clothing options please!

meh, Robson St. is essentially a mall with no roof. The shopping is boring, unoriginal, and uninspiring. In terms of merchandise, what does Robson offer that Metrotown (yuk) or Coquitlam center don’t?

What exactly is a flagship store? Is it just another meaningless term like “oultet store”?

Definition: Of nautical origin, the term “flagship” refers to a ship which is the largest, fastest, newest, most heavily armed, most well known, or the lead ship in a fleet. When applied to a particular retail store, the designation of “flagship” is given to a retailer’s primary location, a store in a prominent location, a chain’s largest store, the store that holds or sells the highest volume of merchandise, a retailer’s most well-known location, a chain’s first retail outlet, or the store location in a chain which carries the most high-priced merchandise catering to the most upscale customers.

A Uniqlo flagship store in Vancouver would be quite the coup for Vancouver as a shopping destination.  Would like to see it in the about to close HMV location at Robson and Burrard or even in the old space once occupied by Escada at Sinclair Centre.

Would also LOVE to see a Uniqlo store here!

Thanks, I know what is MEANT by the term. I just think people attach too much significance to mostly superficial words like “flagship” and “outlet”. These words are merely retail gimmicks that are designed to attract consumers. Yes, some true outlet stores exist, and some true flagship stores exist (I’m not disputing that). But many people incorrectly give a store too much credit (i.e. it’s not a TRUE flagship or TRUE outlet), which just makes the general public even more like a herd of sheep than before these words started getting abused. Rant over! And yes, I like cheese with my whine. Down with massive chain retailers (which erase local culture)!!!

WhIle Simon’s may bring new life to the now vacant HMV Flagship, I have my doubts that they will actually take the space as they have not opened a store outside of Quebec to date (of my knowledge). Our shopper-makeup is definitely different over here as Nordstrom pointed out in one of their recent interviews with CTV (I believe), pointing to the fact that Vancouver/BC shoppers lean towards window shopping more than I guess “actual” shopping and for that reason they’re also hesitant on perhaps looking into taking the Sears space once they close in October. Regardless, I’m excited that we’re about to have a plethora of shopping options and I look forward to these new openings in our city!
