This image was making the rounds on Facebook and Twitter last night and it made me chuckle, thus I deemed it worthy to share on VcB. Looks like the young cub is being told to stay out of Surrey. However, I ask you this, if Simba is hungry and wants to eat samosas, where else can he get 8 for a $1?

I moved from Surrey. Got tired of the cul-de-sac and wannabe rich kids driving expensive cars while living in Newton. Delta isn’t much better but it feels more like a community at least.

Surrey may not be ideal, but I am concerned
with the message this joke is conveying, particularly to youth who grow up in
the neighbourhood. As a Vancouverite, I’m aware of the elitist mentality that
pervades many cities. So I wonder, is
this a classist commentary on property? Or alternatively, is this simply concealed
racism? As Justice Bastarache recognizes,
‘The Surrey area is a culturally and religiously diverse community. It has a
large Protestant and Catholic Christian communities, including a large
Evangelical Christian community. It also has a Sikh population of over 50,000
persons, the largest Muslim community in British Columbia, and a Hindu
community.’ We should be cautious not to
subject the Surrey community to unjustified shame. They are not immoral hyenas; they are an
integral part of our diverse and multicultural community. One Love.

Wow you thought way too hard here.
First of all Vancouver is way more diverse. They too have close to 40,000 Sikhs and South Asians living there along with a large Filipino, Vietnamese, Japanese, Latino, Chinese and minor Jewish communities. Get a grip it’s a joke. Surrey is what it is a lower class suburb.

I was born and raised in Surrey. I am now in my forties and raising my own children in Surrey. When I was a teenager, I hated it. Now, my own teenage daughters hate it the same. Why? Not because it is a bad place to live, but because everybody trashes it! I grew up and realized it is a fine place to live. No better, and no worse than any place else.

I try to laugh when people make these stupid jokes about Surrey, but it gets to be a bit much. Seriously, would all of you trashing Surrey appreciate it if people were spouting off and putting down where your parents raised you, where you choose to live? I think not. It is simply unkind.

Lower class suburb? I didn’t know we were still doing that.

There is good and bad everywhere.

As the person who made this image I can’t help but respond. It’s not racism. I’m of Sri Lankan descent. It’s not classist. It’s not anything. I have nothing against Surrey. I spent most of the last six years in Surrey due to school (SFU Surrey campus). I’ve seen the progress the Whalley area has made first-hand. Most people I know, including myself, take advantage of stereotypes / generalities and poke fun at them. That’s all there is to this joke.

PS: You can’t say 8 samosas for $1 without telling us where this is!
