No Fireworks Celebration Again in Vancouver For NYE

Vancouver Canada News No Fireworks Celebration Again in Vancouver For NYE

Many tourists around town have asked, tweeted or emailed us wondering where the fireworks/celebration gathering for New Year’s Eve (NYE) in Vancouver will be? The answer, there isn’t one and we wonder why city council and their fun police hasn’t put something together.  Cities all over the world ring in the new year in style, yet Vancouver, a ‘world class’ city, has nothing. The city has done well to bring back the  Canada Day celebrations and for the time being the Celebration of Light Festival has been saved. However, there is still nothing for NYE.

Why doesn’t Vancouver host a major NYE celebration? We have the public space to do it. Robson Square, Jack Poole Plaza or Granville Street would fit the bill nicely, albeit Robson Square still needs a lot of work to become a REAL square. Close off a few streets, have people gather around and have a fireworks display from the top of that disgusting Sears building, or the Vancouver Art Gallery.

Perhaps if there was some sort of benefit to the cycling community Mayor Robertson and his staff would have put something together in a heart beat. Hell, the mayor can spin beats at the event if he’s so inclined. Just give the people an official celebration.

The people in charge of fun in this city either don’t see the big picture or need additional funding. Either way, they have to find a way to make it happen. We’ve grown up as a city, Vancouverites like to stay out a little longer and it’s time that city hall realize this. Like it or not, ever since the Olympics the people of Vancouver demand more in terms of outdoor, large scale public events.  At the very least there is a need for a family friendly “First Night” style celebration.

Until we get an official celebration, I guess many Vancouverites will converge at Robson & Granville and watch the clock countdown on the Futureshop screens (if they are doing that again this year) or watch the Roman Candle fireworks being set off in South East Vancouver.

The thing is this mayor and previous council’s are full of old heads with mainly West Side ties. They don’t have the wherewithall to know what people in the city want. I have friends over from Sydney for Christmas and New Year’s and they all are amazed we don’t have anything planned for new year’s eve. Mayor Robertson please fix this.

Occupy Vancouver cost a cool million, could have used that money for something like this. More people would’ve attended.

Where does it say that Vancouver is a world class city? Are you comparing Vancouver to world class cities like Tokyo, London, Paris etc?

    Yours Truly,

    A Vancouverite

fireworks are expensive, we are in a recession, there are more important things than fireworks and nye parties if you ask me.

“the top of that disgusting Sears building” I thought I was the only one who thought that!

To be honest, all I want is ourdoors event. I don’t need confetti, I don’t need a ball dropping, or even fireworks. A family event like “First Night” would be nice around Jack Poole Plaza, streets can be closed off just how like it was during the Stanley Cup playoffs and Olympics 2010. If we can play hockey and Olympic games on the big screens why can’t we have one huge countdown screen somewhere DT for everyone to come by and celebrate?

The last time the city had a major gathering downtown, it ended with rioting and looting.  As for a “First Night” event, the community tried launching an alcohol free event in such places as Granville Island, Science World and even downtown Vancouver, but the necessary support from sponsors and citizens was not there.

Some of our citizens are just as equally at fault for the lack of a civic new year’s eve celebrations.  There isn’t meaningful community culture and support that would foster a sustained, continuous event year after year, and our some of our citizens seem ill equipped at being able to gather downtown in a sober, safe, respectful fashion.

Maybe they’re afraid of another riot.

    I’m just saying
