On August 13 and 14, the South Asian Family Association (www.safa.ca) invites the lower mainland to celebrate the sights, sounds, smells and tastes of India at the Vancouver Sawan Mela at the iconic Jack Poole Plaza, Canada Place. Plus for you Bollywood enthusiasts catch a movie from 8 – 11pm.

For their 9th celebration of Cultural Harmony, the organizers at SAFA promises a weekend full of free, family fun with entertainment hailing from around the world and a marketplace full of goods and food as well. The two-day festival also boasts an outdoor Bollywood movie, the only one of its kind in BC. The 2007 Bollywood blockbuster, “Jab We Met” will air underneath the stars at 8:30pm on Saturday August 13. SAFA has also teamed up with the Rakhi Project for a special Rakhi-tying ceremony at 4pm, also on the 13th. Rakhi celebrates the brother-sister relationship and is about love and respect.

As 2011 is the Year of India in Canada and SAFA will be hosting an Independence Day party on Sunday August 13. “We are excited to be hosting the first South Asian festival at Jack Poole Plaza and we will also be relighting the Olympic Cauldron in celebration of such a glorious day for Indians and the Indian diaspora,” says Grewal. Furthermore, bhangra legend Sarbjit Cheema will play a 45 minute concert of his greatest hits. Cheema made his debut in the Punjabi entertainment industry in 1993 and has since produced 11 hit albums and two Punjabi films.

The talent roster also includes Will Blunderfield, whose album “Hallelujah” topped the i-Tunes download chart this past week edging out Enrique Iglesias for the no. 1 spot; Western Canadian Music Award nominee Cassius Khan, the dancers from the Shiamak Davar Academy, and comedy troupe Bollywood Shenanigans, who will render the film “Jab We Met” down to their 10 minute version.
