If Nothing Changes, Nothing Changes

When it comes to achieving a body transformation I am always reminded of something my friend, Ben Newman, told me when I just started working in the fitness industry.  He told me “if nothing changes, nothing changes.”  It is such a simple saying but so powerful, how can you expect anything to be different in your life unless you consciously choose to execute the actions that will allow change to take place.

If you are able to change at least one behaviour there will be a change in some aspect of your body/life, and in the case of weight loss if one behaviour change isn’t providing you with the change you are looking for than you better find another behaviour to change (and this doesn’t necessarily mean ditching the other behaviour change – you may have yielded a different positive result).

At the beginning of January I wrote a post outlining common actions for achieving weight loss goals and asked you to pick 2-3 of these actions to implement into your life for the first 6 weeks of 2011.  Did you reach your goals?  If you reached your goals congratulations, if not let’s explore more.  For any goal worth achieving you need to do three things: create a plan, execute the plan, and review the plan.  Simply put these 2-3 changes were your plan for reaching your weight loss goal.  When the plan is in place you have to do it.  Finally you have to review your plan to see if it is the right plan for you.  Here are some questions to use during your review process:

  • Were you able to execute the plan fully?
  • What results did you see?
  • Were you asking too much of yourself?
  • Did you pick actions you knew you couldn’t achieve?
  • Did you pick the right actions?

Once you have reviewed your plan you need to retool your plan and get back to work (even if you reached your goal you need to review your plan and see if any changes will make it better).  This is a continuous process as there are always circumstances (good and bad) that pop up when trying to achieve a goal and knowing how to deal with them is essential to success.  Einstein’s definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results… as you pursue your goal remember Einstein and “if nothing changes, nothing changes!”
