Change For Change, a rapidly expanding coin drive established in Vancouver, has announced its second annual fundraising effort to bring change into the lives of youth in the Lower Mainland through Covenant House Vancouver. The fundraising drive runs January 17 – February 24, 2011 and aims to raise 6000 lbs. of spare change or approximately $10,000.

According to Aaron Hutchinson, director and founder of Change For Change, “I wanted to create an easy way for the community to give back. Personally, I got tired of lying to the homeless whenever they asked me for spare change. I knew I had it to give, I just never knew what the money was actually going toward. Change For Change was created so myself and others could easily donate our change to a place that would actually make a life changing difference for kids, right here at home.”

Currently, there are 30 participating location hubs within the Vancouver area. Initially aimed towards the restaurant community, Change For Change has expanded to everything from high profile restaurants to coffee shops and hair salons. These hubs will be responsible for raising funds within their establishment with the help of staff, as well as collecting donations from the community. This year the event is being globally recognized, bringing awareness to youth across Canada and the rest of the world with the help of Juno nominated local Canadian rock band, Marianas Trench. The band has been a huge supporter from inception, and is running a global contest aimed at their fans. With three amazing top prizes for the individuals or teams that raise the most money, they have participants reaching as far as Mexico and the UK. As Hutchinson notes, “The goal is to also educate the public, create and raise awareness, and to inspire others to actively participate in giving back to their community, wherever that may be.” For contest details, check out http://www.facebook.com/notes/marianas-trench/marianas-trench-contest-in-support-of-change-for-change/10150126106054258

Change For Change was created to make a positive impact on an individual’s life, specifically our youth. Covenant House Vancouver does just that, “I chose Covenant House because they aim to shelter and develop youth in need of help so that they too can have the life that we all strive for. These kids were dealt a bad hand to no fault of their own. I think every kid deserves a fair shake at a great life and should get the chance to grow up in a healthy and supportive environment.”

Covenant House Vancouver relies on the generosity of over 50,000 individuals and organizations to provide shelter, food, clothing and counseling to over 2,000 young people each year. The programs are developed for youth aged 16 – 24 who have either willingly fled physical, emotional and/or sexual abuse or those who have been forced from their homes. Their programs are designed to provide each young person with a “one-stop-shop” approach to leaving the streets and achieving independence.

A final weigh-in party is set to take place on the last day of the drive, February 24 at Society Dining Lounge in Yaletown. The evening will include live entertainment, food and beverage deals for guests, prizes / twitter contests and strong social media interaction / exposure. Guests are encouraged to bring their coins.
