DOXA 2010: Documentary Film Festival

If you want to avoid the line ups with people thriving to see Robert Downey Jr get upstaged by Sam Rockwell and Mickey Rourke in Iron Man 2 you may want to take in the last few days of the Vancouver DOXA Documentary Film Festival which wraps up Sunday. Playing between the Empire Theatres on Granvile, Pacific Cinémathèque and the Vancity Theatre on Seymour Street there is bound to be something for everyone.

Being a music buff the one film that caught my eye and will likely be very popular at the festival is the look at the changing underground music scene in Vancouver titled “No Fun City” centering around how Vancouver’s more grungy neighborhoods are now full of upscale condominiums and just how hard it is to “play loud, hard and fast in this world class city.” This movie opened on Monday May 10th and has been given a second screening on Sunday May 16th where rush tickets may be available at the door, advanced tickets have already sold out.

Another film that looks interesting centers around Soccer/Futball (what ever term you fancy) “Referees” (also the title of the film) and the extreme emotional demand and hardship of their trade. If you thought the refs in Canada working NHL games have it rough, this will make their job look like a cushy CEO position where the hardest part of your day is picking a lunch. This Belgium film looks at the job of a ref like you’ve never seen before and might just make you think twice before chanting “Refs suck” at a hockey game… Tickets are still available for this film which shows on Thursday May 13th 6pm at Pacific Cinémathèque

The DOXA Festival which last year expanded to 10 days of films keeps growing and hopefully with more support the coming years will get even better with more and more films and talent rushing to Vancouver in May for not only the Summer-like weather but the DOXA Documentary Film Festival.
