To the inhabitants of Vancouver this comes as no surprise as we are constantly voted in the top ten in terms of liveability. Last week the guys at Askmen.com (one of our favourite sites btw) tipped us off that Vancouver has placed in the top 29. Which place you ask? That is yet to be revealed, it will be revealed on March 31st. Our hunch is that we are rated somewhere in the top 15.

a comprehensive roundup of the year’s most inhabitable cities for the everyday man. The 2009 edition of the Top 29 marks the first of what we anticipate will become a popular annual mainstay on the site, and we’re very excited for the big reveal! Seven unique guy-centric rating categories were used in helping to determine the final Top 29 rankings – each of which are outlined in detail at the end of this e-mail for reference purposes.

The Rankings were based on the following 7 categories:

1. Dating & Sex

  • Points awarded if the city is home to more women than men.
  • Points awarded if the majority of women in the city are single.
  • Points awarded if more than half of the female population has a university degree.
The women in this city are simply beautiful, although perceived to be snobbish by some individuals, UD would say otherwise. I think the men are just afraid to approach the beauties that inhabit this town.

2. Sports & Entertainment

  • Points awarded if at least 50% of the country’s professional sports leagues have teams in this city Points awarded if a once-in-a-lifetime event is scheduled to take place in this city (World Cup, long awaited reunion concert, etc.)
  • Points awarded if bars and clubs are open later than 2 a.m.
We got the MLS now, CFL and of course the NHL. Lets bring back the Grizz and we’re solid. As for a lifetime event um…Olympics anyone. Bars are open later on the weekend so that should help. I think we take for granted how good our nightlife is and it’s only getting better.

3. Culture

  • Points awarded if there is at least one Michelin-starred restaurant in this city.
  • Points awarded if there is at least one celebrity chef-helmed restaurant in this city.
  • Points awarded if this city hosts a regular international arts festival (film festival, culinary festival, jazz festival, etc.)
  • Points awarded if at least 30% of the city’s workforce is employed in the creative class.

In terms of restaurants we are truly world class and by the best in Canada and top 5 in North America.

4. Fashion

  • Points awarded if this city hosts an annual fashion week.
  • Points awarded if the city is host to a reputable menswear-only store.

Fashion is going on this week and we have Harry Rosen and soon to be Brooks Brothers.

5. Health

  • Points awarded if rate of male heart disease is below the worldwide average.
  • Points awarded if the male life span is above the worldwide average.

We got most cities beat on this hands down.

6. Power & Money

  • Points awarded if city experienced job growth in 2008 (prior to onset of economic crisis).
  • Points awarded if city experienced income growth in 2008 (prior to onset of economic crisis).
  • Points awarded if cost of living is below the international urban average.
  • Points awarded if the average cost of a pint of beer in the city is below the worldwide average.

Our hippie roots will drag us down as well as the exhorbitant cost of living.

7. The Good Life

  • Points awarded if the number of annual sunshine hours is above 2,000.
  • Points awarded if city airport hosts flights to more than 100 international destinations.
  • Points awarded if at least two major urban developments are currently underway (a new subway system, a new museum, green space, etc.)

Be sure to check back on March 31, 2009 for the big reveal!
